Why is the fashion industry more accepting of homosexuality and gender issues than the film industry

The Oscar nominations have caused a lot of controversy this year. The lack of diversity in both racial nominations and queer movie nominations have sparked a lot of outrage for many celebrities as well as a sea of complaints across social media. Jada Pinkett-Smith has decided to Boycott the award ceremony in protest to the all-white nominations. She tweeted "At the Oscars...people of color are always welcomed to give out awards...even entertain, but we are rarely recognized for our artistic accomplishments. Should people of color refrain from participating all together? People can only treat us in the way in which we allow. With much respect in the midst of deep disappointment. J".

Although there are no interracial actors or actresses nominated, there are nominations for actors that starred in queer movies. For example, Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl, and Cate Blanchett for Carol. There are also supporting actors/actresses nominated for these films, which is progress for the LGBT community. However the films themselves have not been nominated for 'Best Picture', so there is still some improvement to be made.

The fashion industry is increasingly pushing the boundaries and constantly accepting change and unique identities. Many gay creatives are portraying their sexuality through their collections to show that they are no longer afraid to show who they are and to inspire others to be themselves. J.W Anderson's menswear show aired live on the Grindr hook-up app, and Anderson stated "we always look for a way to push boundaries when it comes to gender and our aesthetic".

This seasons menswear collections in London show a gender-neutral theme throughout all of the garments, from Topman Designs to Rory Parnell Mooney. Craig Green displayed undone maxi-laces throughout his collections, creating a sexy and naughty mood, whilst Grace Wales Bonner showcased a range of crystal-encrusted 1970s inspired pieces that explored black spirituality.

From Jaden Smith being in the new womenswear campaign for Louis Vuitton, to the rising transgender model Andreja Pejic, the fashion world is constantly evolving and flowing with the forever changing society we see around us. Fingers crossed the film industry follows in the footsteps of the fashion industry.
