Designer Download: metaMorphosis by Becky Dodman

1. A complete change of form, structure, or substance, a transformation by magic or witchcraft.

Launched on Monday 23rd February 2015, Becky Dodman released her new knitwear collection called 'metaMorphosis'. She partnered up with Plymouth freelance photographer, Dom Moore, to capture her insect-influenced garments. Dodman is a designer, as well as an HE fashion lecturer at Plymouth College of Art. Becky used a mix of knitwear machines and 3D printers to produce 8 kaftans, and 8 3D printed masks. Dodman's work was inspired by insects, from stag beetles to caterpillas, as well as an influence of traditional African ceremonies and Kifwebe masks.

Working in her studio in Modbury, this year-long project was created with a 1960s double bed knit machine. She experimented with structures to create quilted kaftans to capture the metamorphosis theme. As well as this, Becky collaborated with Plymouth College of Art FAB LAB team to develop her 3D embellished masks. The unisex knitwear collection was funded by Arts Council England and supported by Plymouth College of Art.

In my opinion, the collection exuberates futuristic attire, contrasting with traditional influences and an overall bug-like motion. The 3D printed masks give an illusion of insect inspired features, similar to that of a pray mantis. As well as the garments themselves, the movement in the photography with the multi-coloured lighting portrays the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly. For me, the semiotics of the photos suggest a sci-fi vibe, and I think that the body language, textures and shapes trigger this thought.

The photography really captures the meaning of the pieces, and projects the intentions further. The coloured lighting that trails behind the model, following the movements, allows the alien garments to be displayed creatively and adds a visual iridescence. I can't wait to see what Becky Dodmans next move is.
